Women in Science at Isla Mar: Katie Flynn

For Women's History Month this March, we're celebrating Isla Mar's women in science! Dive in as we get to know what inspires them, what energizes them, and what gives them hope for the future.

Meet Katie Flynn | Marine Scientist

I am Katie Flynn and I am a freelance marine biologist here in Puerto Rico. I work for a couple smaller companies, including Isla Mar, that are dedicated to scientific research and coral reef restoration.

Why do you love your job?

I love the ocean and I love Puerto Rico! Sometimes I forget how lucky I am to live here where I can just jump in the water and be on a coral reef, one of the most amazing ecosystems in the world.

What’s your favorite part of work?

What I love most about my job is field work. Being out in nature, out on the ocean, in the ocean diving in the coral reefs right in the ecosystems I'm trying to learn about.

Tell us about science

What do I want people to know about the work that I do? I think I’m going to go general and say, “Science”. Science is humanity's best attempt to understand ourselves and the world around us. Throughout history we've been accumulating this incredible amount of knowledge and there’s a lot of people out there working and dedicating their lives to science and to contributing to that great body of knowledge.
