Men in Science at Isla Mar: Carlos Zayas

Our work wouldn't be possible without the amazing people on our team! So, to continue our tribute, we will be featuring the Men in Science at Isla Mar during April. So dive in as we get to know what inspires them, what energizes them, and what gives them hope for the future.

Carlos Zayas | Marine Scientist

Hello, my name is Carlos Zayas Santiago and I am a Marine Biologist here in Puerto Rico.

Why do you love the ocean?

One thing I love about the ocean is that it’s a place where you can find new stuff. There's always something interesting in the ocean. Everything is changing - it can be a very calm place or it can be a very chaotic place and that's something that I admire and I really like about the ocean.

What’s your favorite part of work?

One of my favorite parts of my job is being in contact with nature. It is a very humbling experience, it calms me down, and every time I'm with nature I learn new things. Something that looks or seems mysterious doesn't seem to be mysterious anymore after you learn about it.

Tell us about the field of Marine Science

One thing that I want people to know about the ocean and the field of marine biology is that even though the ocean seems like a scary, dark, and alien place that we don't know anything about, the more we know about it and the more we learn about it, we learn from ourselves and about ourselves. And we learn, for example, that some fish and some other species have the same daily routine as us. So simple things you do in the day can have an impact on the ocean and the things that go on in the fish's life or the animal's life can impact you as well. We’re all connected.
